About SwimSafer 2.0
SwimSafer was introduced in July 2010 by the National Water Safety Council and enhanced in 2018. SwimSafer 2.0 is the National Water Safety Programme.
The programme teaches swimming and water safety in a logical progression through six stages, each with about 12 hours of lesson time. Each stage covers entries and exits, sculling and body orientation, underwater skills, swimming strokes, survival skills, rescue skills and water safety knowledge.
Students are introduced to the pool and basic skills in Stage 1. By the end of Stage 6, they have the skills needed to go on to other aquatic activities such as competitive swimming, sailing, kayaking and lifesaving courses.
The recommended minimum age to start is 6, though this may vary between service providers and instructors. To receive a stage certificate, a swimmer must pass both an online theory quiz and a practical assessment.
